EMT Conduit

E.M.T. Conduit or Electrical Metal Tubing is used to route wires and other conductors and can be utilized in indoor or outdoor applications. The outside is galvanized for corrosion protection and the inside has an approved corrosion-resistant organic coating. An E.M.T conduit pipe is useful for routing wires by safely grouping them together. Placing the wiring in a protective sleeve also makes for easier maintenance because the pipes clearly show which wires connect to what.

The primary use of electrical pipe conduits is for safety. Conduits isolate wires to avoid exposure thereby reducing the risk of short-circuits, electrocution or fires. Another benefit is connectivity. Pipe conduits group all the wires together in one place, isolating them from other wire connections. Circuit integrity is also enhanced through the use of pipe conduits since most are designed to be fire resistance and water-resistant. In some cases, there can even be an aesthetic benefit to using a conduit, depending on the design of the space.

EMT is installed by use of setscrew or compression-type couplings and connectors. It is permitted to have an integral coupling comprised of an expanded, ™belled™ shape tube on one end with setscrews. EMT with integral couplings is available in trade sizes 1-1/4 through 4. E.M.T. is available in 1/2" - 4" and 10-foot lengths. 20-foot lengths are available upon special request.

EMT Conduit Accessories

EMT conduit is generally manufactured of coated steel although it is sometimes made of aluminum. It is more frequently used in commercial and industrial applications, and not so much in residential buildings. Aluminum conduit is preferred for installations where higher corrosion resistance is required. Coated steel conduit is recommended for installations inside concrete, as aluminum reacts to alkalis in cement.
