OTDR testing is performed by transmitting and analyzing pulsed laser light traveling through an optical fiber. By simply clamped the tester onto a fiber, where they induce a safe macro-bend and allow a small amount of light to escape. Units use this light to detect the presence of network traffic, test tones or CW signals and indicate the direction of the signal.

The Visual Fault Locators (VFL) and the OTDR work hand in hand with each other when it comes to locating breaks in an optical fiber. The OTDR can provide the operator with the distance the break. The VFL allows the operator to see the break in the optical fiber.
